In Situ was born in the woods.

Long stays in the cloud forest of northwestern Ecuador kindled an interest in tropical plants, particularly the many species of orchids and other epiphytes that grow in the cool, damp montane forests in that area. Years of frenzied collection, propagation and formal training began soon afterwards, and in 2014 we created In Situ Plants as an outlet for our horticultural endeavors.

We endeavor to instill that same sense of wonder at the diversity, tenacity and interconnected world of plants that we felt during our time down there, and to recreate slices of these ecological landscapes in our work. We want to highlight the vibrance in the way that they grow and thrive, the way they dynamically grow within our interior spaces, and create moments when we can interact with nature.

We believe in the concept of biophilia: humans` innate need for affiliation with other living organisms. We want everyone to have the opportunity to reconnect with the natural world as part of their daily life, and to experience the benefits of plants indoors.

In Situ borrows its name from the Latin phrase which refers to something literally ‘in its natural or original position’. In botany, it signifies an organism in its natural habitat, and we take this to heart when undertaking any project. We want our plants to look and behave as though they belong where they have been placed, and to perform as well as they would in nature.
